Our Verdict
The Montane Featherlite Jacket does exactly what I want from a windproof layer: it cuts wind chill effectively while remaining comfortable enough to leave on for long periods. The PERTEX Quantum Air fabric strikes a well-judged balance between protection and breathability, making it particularly useful during sustained efforts in cool, exposed conditions.
At 93g (Medium), it remains impressively light, yet avoids feeling stripped back. The full-length front zip allows easy temperature regulation, the adjustable hem helps keep draughts at bay, and the zipped chest pocket provides a convenient place for small essentials. The trim fit works well over a baselayer or light fleece without restricting movement.
It also copes surprisingly well with light showers. While it is not a substitute for a waterproof shell, brief spells of rain are rarely an issue, and the fabric dries very quickly once conditions improve.
For fast hillwalking, backpacking and long-distance trails, it is a highly effective layer that earns its place in the pack.
