Our Verdict
I used the original Flextail pump when they came out several years ago, and although I liked it, I eventually stopped using it in favour of a pump sack. However, I was keen to get my hands on the new Max Pump, which could replace two items I bring on overnight camps: a lantern and a power bank. (If you are using your phone for navigation or are on a multi-day hike, I would not recommend leaving your power bank at home in place of the Max Pump.)
The Max rapidly inflates your sleeping pad; we tested the Max Pump out with a NeoAir XLite NXT Regular Sleeping Mat, and it fully inflated the mat in 26 seconds, which is crazy fast. After a long day hiking, even using a pump sack can be a chore.
The Max Pump can also deflate your mat, which efficiently removes all the air from the pad without you having to squeeze it like a toothpaste tube. As it removes all the air, the mat takes up much less room in your backpack when you pack it.
The Max has an integrated lamp with an impressive 500-lumen output on full power but a lower 50-lumen output, which I found adequate to light my tent. The Max Pump has a small hook which, with the help of a carabiner, is hooked onto my tent's washing line.
The Max can also charge your phone or other electronic devices; it is only a backup and shouldn't replace a dedicated power bank, but it's good to know you have an alternative in an emergency.
It's incredibly compact and lightweight, especially if you are leaving your pump sack and lantern at home; it's a little noisy, so if you are stealth camping, this could be a giveaway. It comes with several different attachments so that the pump will fit most standard air mattresses. Overall, we are really impressed with this little pump.
