A max-cushion trail shoe built for long distances, and smooth, efficient movement
Hoka says:
Calling all trail racing fiends, gravel grinders, and 100-milers. There’s a new trail titan in town. Built for long-haul efforts, the Mafate X delivers supreme plushness with a dual-density, premium foam chassis, PEBA top layer, and a pop of propulsion thanks to our forked carbon fiber plate. We’ve implemented an ultralight woven upper that allows for easy drainage and Vibram® Megagrip outsole with pod-like cutouts to ensure a smooth ride over variable terrain.
Our Verdict
The Mafate X weighs 318g per shoe and centres on a high-stack platform designed to reduce on the trail. The fit is secure through the heel with a slightly more accommodating forefoot. Underfoot, the dual-density cushioning is soft yet controlled, though it may be too cushioned on technical terrain for some. The addition of a carbon plate and pronounced rocker creates a smooth-rolling gate
Grip is reliable across mixed terrain, with the outsole performing well on dry trails, gravel and wet rock. The upper is lightweight and breathable, draining quickly after wet ground or crossings. The overall feel is more about consistency and efficiency than precision.
