Our Verdict
The Altra Lone Peak 9 continues to build on the legacy of its predecessors, and as someone who’s relied on the Lone Peak family since the 6s, I can confidently say this iteration doesn’t disappoint.
The headline feature is the Vibram Megagrip sole, a welcome addition that elevates traction on wet and dry surfaces alike. Paired with the Altra EGO midsole, the shoe strikes an excellent balance between comfort and ground feel, ideal for long days on rugged terrain. The 100% recycled ripstop mesh upper is both durable and breathable, while the no-sew overlays give it a seamless fit that feels sturdy yet flexible.
In use, the Lone Peak 9 retains the signature zero-drop platform and wide toe box, allowing natural foot movement and all-day comfort. It feels slightly roomier in the midfoot compared to earlier models, which I appreciated on longer treks. The redesigned outsole extends further into high-wear areas for enhanced durability—a thoughtful touch for those who push their shoes to the limit.
While it doesn’t reinvent the wheel, the Lone Peak 9 delivers incremental improvements that keep it a leader in its class. For versatile grip, a natural fit, and reliable performance, this is a trail runner that lives up to its name.
