Versatility is the key with Exped's Impulse pack. A great design with loads of useful features, good looks and a durable outer for all kinds of adventures in the hills and mountains.
Exped says
Impulse is a versatile companion for a wide range of ambitious day tours, from all-day trail runs to alpine mountaineering and day hiking. The zippered main compartment opens wide at the top for easy access to clothing and larger items.
Inside are four mesh pockets: one zippered pocket at the top, one pouch on each side of the bottom and a hydration pouch along the foam back. Tube ports on each side and elastic keepers on each shoulder strap accommodate left or right hydration-tube orientation . A small outer zippered pocket and three stretch mesh pouches provide plenty of quick-access external stowage. A lightly padded, double-layer base maintains lower load stability and enhances durability. External daisy chains and EXPED's exclusive Tool Blade combine to securely transport ice tools and other hardware. A removable compression cord with toggle adjustment compresses the load when necessary. Thermo-formed back panel and padded, contoured shoulder straps are comfortable and quick drying. Impulse 15 is sold with a lightweight waist strap; 20 and 30 liter versions with removeable, low-profile, padded hip belts, each with a small, zippered stretch pocket.
Our Verdict
Exped's Impulse 20 Rucksack is an impressive day pack that looks and performs as well in the mountains as it does commuting into the city. The large main compartment has enough pockets to keep your kit organised, whether that's a laptop and work items or climbing kit and spare layers. The tough, water repellent fabric stands up to abrasions really well and
The design of the bag makes it really comfortable for longer trips and heavier loads than you might expect. The versatile nature of the daisy chains and movable compression cord is a key part of this pack. It allows you to quickly, easily and safely attach your gear to it so you can just get on with things. I've used this for overnight trips in the summer, winter day hikes and all sorts of little adventures in town and countryside. It has all the usual features with stretch mesh pockets, inner pockets, it's hydration bladder compatible and the hip belts are removable for fast and light trips.
