We started testing this backpack in 2021. Several variations and a bunch of prototypes and here is the most minimalist backpack, with a minimum of accessories and lightweight buckles and straps. Instead of some traditional straps, it is now a 2mm UHMW PE cord. This should allow you to concentrate exclusively on the trail and enjoy the stunning views of the mountains.
The backpack design has a simple RollTop loading design for quick access and easy volume adjustment. Many additional pockets for quick access, convenient placement and easy packing of equipment.
The backpack helps to improve your speed, efficiency, increase hiking distance and pleasure from the mountains. Perfect choice for those who want to save every gram in their gear.
Ultra™ 100 is the woven fabric is 67% UHMWPE and 33% Repreve recycled polyester. The proprietary Challenge RUV recycled film backing is 100% recycled and 97% UV Resistant. Every yard of Ultra™ 100 saves over one pound of CO2, compared to Nylon pack fabric.
The main material (fabric) of the backpack is 100% waterproof, but please, pay attention that the seams of the backpack are not sealed. This means that the backpack is not waterproof.
Our Verdict
The Liteway HKR Pack Ultra 35L is a focused, stripped-back option for ultralight hikers who appreciate simplicity done well. Weighing around 390g (or 314g stripped of its cords and straps), it offers a clean 35 litres of storage, with 25 litres in the main body and the rest split between a stretch front pocket, bottom stash, two side pockets, and two shoulder strap pockets.
Made from Ultra 100 fabric—a durable blend of UHMWPE and recycled polyester—it feels tough for its weight and shrugs off light rain. Just be aware the seams aren't sealed, so a liner or dry bags would be sensible in wet weather. I like the addition of the bottom stash pocket and the shoulder strap pockets—they’re both genuinely useful. The bottom pocket is ideal for quick-access snacks or rubbish, and having extra space up front on the shoulder straps makes it easier to keep essentials, like a phone or water bottles, close at hand.
The side pockets are generously sized, easily accommodating 1.5–2 litre bottles. The roll-top closure keeps things simple and tidy. Comfort-wise, it rides well for a frameless design, provided you stay within the recommended 12kg load. The hipbelt is minimalist and pocket-free, designed more to stabilise the load than to bear weight—something worth keeping in mind if you're used to a more supportive setup.
