Our Verdict
At just 38g, the Mountain Equipment Highpile Beanie offers surprising insulation for its weight. The 250g/m² fleece has plenty of loft, but because the fabric remains fairly open, it breathes surprisingly well.
I like the simplicity here. There is very little to go wrong; it packs down easily, and the polyester construction dries quickly if it gets damp.
The trade-off is wind resistance. The open fleece lets more air through, but you can always just put your hood up.
