Constructed with Toray Dermizax™ 2.75-layer fabric, these pants are fully waterproof, windproof, and breathable for comfort in wet, windy conditions. The 15D ripstop nylon shell is exceptionally lightweight yet durable, and the back pocket doubles as a stuff sack for compact storage. Functional details include ankle zippers, elastic cuffs with gripper tape, and lace loops for secure fit, while a gusseted crotch and elastic waistband with drawcord provide mobility and comfort. Reflective logos add visibility in low light for confidence in any conditions.
Our Verdict
At 171g (Medium), the Outdoor Research Helium UL Pant remains firmly aimed at fast-and-light backpackers who want dependable waterproof protection without carrying a heavier shell. The standout update is the new Dermizax fabric, which adds a welcome amount of stretch and gives the trousers a softer, less clammy feel than previous Helium models.
The trim fit keeps bulk to a minimum while the gusseted crotch allows a natural stride. Breathability is particularly impressive for such a lightweight waterproof, although sustained steep climbs will still generate some heat and sweat buildup. Ankle zips, lace loops and the pocket that doubles as a stuff sack are practical details that suit the minimalist design.
For three-season hiking and long-distance backpacking, this feels like a refined update to an already popular ultralight waterproof.
