Our Verdict
Released in 2020, the Mariposa backpack has been a mainstay in our backpacking kit list since its arrival. Its exceptional carrying capacity and load distribution set it apart as a top-tier bag. The pack features a spacious main compartment and seven external pockets for organised storage. On the rear is a large mesh pocket, ideal for storing wet weather gear, and a long side pocket that perfectly fits most ultralight shelters. The two "double-decker" pockets on the opposite side are perfect for frequently used items like water filters or trowels. Additionally, there are two hip belt pockets and a small pocket on the lid for documents or a compact first aid kit.
This updated pack boasts tougher, more water-resistant fabrics reinforced at the seat of the bag and along the lower pockets, ensuring durability and protection from the elements. This more robust fabric seems to be where the pack has gained weight (it's 100g heavier than its predecessor). The internal hydration pocket has been removed, which helps shed weight, but in all honesty, I have never used this pocket. This aligns with the Gossamer Gear “Take less, do More” mentality.
The new S-curve harness and load lifters contribute to enhanced comfort. At first, I was concerned about the latest model because the bag now sits higher than before (near the base of my skull). However, when the load lifters are pulled tight, the pack streamlines and sits comfortably on top of my shoulders like I'm used to.
The new PVT (pivot) Frame + hip belt system provides a snug fit and ample support. This innovative system places the pack's aluminium frame in a pocket on the back centre of the hip belt, ensuring a secure and comfortable fit while effectively transferring weight and promoting flexibility. The hip belt system offers a customisable option, with a straight belt for men and a curved belt for women, ensuring a personalised fit for every adventurer.
Overall, the enhanced Gossamer Gear Mariposa 60 backpack represents a significant advancement in backpack design, combining functionality and comfort in a lightweight and durable package.
