The Gossamer Gear Thinlight Foam Insulation Pad is the sleeping pad of your minimalist dreams. With 12 different uses - from adding insulation to your sleep system to its use as an on trail yoga mat, there is every reason for a thinlight pad to be an essential part of your ultralight backpacking kit. The average weight of the new Thinlight pad remains the same as previous versions.
R-Value: We have not determined a R Value or temperature rating for the closed cell foam due to its variable density - but based on thermal conductivity data compiled by an independent scientist, we estimate the R values to be 0.5 for the 1/8" Thinlight.
Please note that some pads will feature scuffs, small air pockets, or creases. This is cosmetic and does not affect performance. The folded pad perfectly replaces the sit pad in a size medium pack without any trimming. NOTE: sizes may vary by up to ½" length / 1.3 cm
Our Verdict
At 94g for the folded version, it’s not something I’d rely on as a standalone mat, but paired beneath an inflatable, it earns its place. It provides a valuable layer between the air mat and the tent floor, reducing the risk of punctures and adding enough insulation to remove the edge from colder ground. It also helps stop mats sliding around on slick silnylon floors .
Beyond sleeping, it works well as a sit pad or for pack structure in a frameless pack. The folded design slots neatly into a pack sleeve or can be reconfigured easily depending on the day’s needs.
The Thinlight doesn’t try to be flashy or overengineered; it’s a simple, functional piece that plays well with the rest of a sleep system. If you’re looking to protect your mat and gain a bit more versatility without excess weight, it's worth a look.

ASTM R-Value:
From 2020, there is a new industry standard for measuring the R-value (level of insulation) of sleeping mats – ASTM F3340-18. This new standard is the sleeping mat equivalent to the EN rating for sleeping bags.
You can now directly compare the R-value of mats rated using the ASTM F3340-18 with confidence that is a fair and accurate comparison between mats. In simple terms, the higher the R-value, the warmer the mat.
In general terms, an R-value below 2.0 is for summer use, 2.0 to 4.0 is for cooler 3 season use and 4.0+ is for winter temperatures.
