UOG TOP PICK -Fast Kumo 36 Fastpack- Gossamer gear packs follow a simple design; they are lightweight and well-constructed, with many additional features that make the bag a pleasure to use on the trail. The Fast Kumo redesigns the original Kumo, evolving the bag into a running vest/Traditional bag hybrid .Overall a fantastic bag for quick hikes when minimal gear is needed, everything we love, and one of our top picks.
Gossamer Gear says:
The Fast Kumo is a new spin on a Gossamer Gear classic. This pack has been re-designed with a vest- like fit and easy access storage to keep up with you at your fastest speeds. This fastpack is designed to be worn higher and tighter than our original Kumo. For this reason, the back length for S/M is 16" and 18" for M/L. Please keep this in mind when selecting your size.
Our Verdict
The bag's main draw will be for fast hikers and trail runners who like to take a little more kit into the backcountry. The newly designed harness now sits like a running vest, with two sternum straps that help eliminate bounce; both can be adjusted for a tailored fit.
The shoulder straps have been widened to better spread the pack's weight. Each shoulder strap has numerous pockets, so all your essentials can be kept close; a zipped pocket to keep your phones safe, two water bottle pockets, pockets for snacks and energy gels, and an emergency whistle have also been included.
The Kumo Fastpack also has two side pockets suitable for water bottles and a large mesh pocket for further storage, wet weather gear maps etc. There are shock cord compression straps on both side panels. A lashing loop could be used as an ice axe holder, but I'm not convinced how effective it would be, and a super lightweight trekking pole attachment (just a bit of cord) gives you an attachment for telescopic poles, which can be a little more unwieldy.
I'm not a trail runner, but I can pick up some speed while hiking, especially if I'm doing some miles to train for a long walk; the pack sits very when moving fast and doesn't dart around. If you are going super lightweight, you could fit a small shelter, quilt, mat and cook set in this bag if you have super light gear.
