Our Verdict
The Montane Extreme Smock has a legendary reputation. So much so that Montane have re-released it having discontinued it for a few years and the fact that they have barely changed the design since it's first incarnation nearly 30 years ago says it all. Used by numerous Mountain professionals the Extreme jacket is built for harsh conditions.
The directional material pushes moisture away from the body whilst keeping you warm. The reinforced patches on the elbows have a hydrostatic head of 10,000mm and the outer material is now 100% recycled. The detachable hood is now held on with a zip which is far more secure than the old Velcro version. The fit has been updated since the older incarnation but is still designed to accommodate layers underneath. Although from personal use you don't need much especially when out walking. Opening up the side vents when going up hill is still a great way of losing heat and moisture quickly. The kangaroo pouch pocket is still a very handy and secure place to keep snacks or essentials and the single large hand pocket allows you to keep your hands together whilst inside the pocket. They have also removed the crotch strap which is one less thing to lose.
When the weather is at it's worst putting the hood up and cinching in the toggles around the head gives the ultimate protection and although it is a heavy piece of kit it's design has stood the test of time. It's great to have it back in the range.
