The Berghaus Guide hoody from the re-introduced Extrem range, offers a mid-layer that is both warm, breathable and non-restrictive so is perfect for those looking to move fast and burn some energy.
Berghaus says:
The Men's MTN Guide MW Hoody helps you maintain optimum temperature and comfort. Pushing hard in the mountains means sweat. In cold conditions you can’t afford for your layers to become saturated or you’ll get cold, fast. That’s why layering and fabrics are so important. Polartec® Power Grid™ makes this hoody fast wicking and quick drying, whilst remaining lightweight. With its built in Polartec® Power Wool™ neck gaiter / mask it provides amazing comfort and performance. This is quite simply everything you need from a mid-layer for high output activities in cold conditions.
Our Verdict
The Mountain Guide Hoody is the Berghaus' optimum warm but breathable layer within the re-introduced Extrem range, that has some unique features.
The Guide Hoody is designed to offer a warm mid-layer for a slow-paced activity, but then one that is highly breathable when the activities get more intense and moisture needs to be wicked away from the body as quickly as possible. To do this Berghaus have use the Polartec Powergrid fabric, which allows quick transfer of moisture away from the body through the channels as well as allowing air to get to the body. The Powergrid also allows for a lot of stretch so you can get a close-fitting mid layer that isn't restrictive, keeping the heat in when needed, and providing a lot of freedom of movement.
The unique feature of the guide hoody is the integrated neck gaiter/face mask, that uses a new knitted fabric which is a combination of synthetics and Merino wool, so it is warm stretchy and it won't smell. This an interesting feature as it is like an internal buff, which I can see being useful for biking and snow sports, or on a really windy accent. However, the fact that it is not removable may make it a bit more of a marmite addition.
The fit of the guide hoody makes it a good choice for more energetic activities and the breathability and wicking capabilities, combined with the stretch fabric mean that it works really well for this use and I can see it being a popular choice among climbers, bikers, guides and Snowsport users.
