Our Verdict
At 173g (Medium), the Montbell DRYTEC Stretch Rain Pants are light waterproof overtrousers with a strong focus on movement and breathability. The 3-layer DRYTEC fabric provides reliable rain protection. At the same time, the stretch and articulated knees should make them feel less restrictive than stiffer shell trousers when stepping up, walking quickly, or wearing them for longer wet spells.
I like the knee-length side zips, as they make the trousers easier to pull on over trail shoes or lightweight boots, but I do like a full-length zip on over trousers, mainly for venting. The Samue System is another useful detail, helping tidy the lower leg around footwear. The 15-denier fabric keeps weight low, but it will need more care; it's best to avoid bushwacking.
