The Deviator Insulated Hoody is a breathable, windproof, and insulated mid-layer that is suitable for winter pursuits such as hiking, biking, and climbing. It is made with a windproof outer shell, a breathable VerticalX insulating fleece, and a Grid Fleece material on the underarms, back panel, and sides of the chest.

Outdoor Research says:

Innovative and comfortable, we broke the mold to create this must-have layer for active endeavors.

Our Verdict

The Deviator Hoody is a high-octane mid-layer for winter pursuits focusing on breathability over insulation. It has a windproof outer shell protects you from the elements, while the highly breathable VerticalX insulating fleece keeps you warm and comfortable. The underarms, back panel, and sides of the chest are made from a Grid Fleece material that allows for even greater airflow, so you can stay cool and dry even when sweating.

The hood is well-insulated and does not have an adjustment point. However, the elasticated face opening ensures a good fit that keeps wind and snowdrifts from entering the jacket. There is one Napoleon chest pocket and two hand-warming pockets. The hem of the Deviator is not elasticated, which is a good thing because I find that this is the number one cause of mid-layer riding up and becoming uncomfortable, especially when climbing or scrambling. The lack of elastication also means that the jacket can be layered over other clothing without feeling too tight.

This layer is best suited to fast mountain hikers, bikers and climbers. Though it is primarily a winter piece, it's still a good layer year-round. It packs down small and only weighs 346g (for the medium), so it can comfortably live in your day pack year-round. I take my old Deviator camping during the summer; it is an excellent layer to throw on around the camp or on the way home from the pub.
