The Buff Rain Bucket Hat focuses on reliable waterproofing without the bulk of traditional shell headwear. The bonded seams and 5000mm rating give it a level of protection that feels closer to a lightweight jacket, but without the enclosed, stuffy feel of a hood.
At 75g (S/M), it remains comfortable over longer periods, with a soft inner mesh that manages moisture well. Breathability is good for a waterproof design, with less clamminess than expected, though it still feels warmer than a standard sun hat, especially on sustained climbs.
The adjustable fit is easy to dial in and keeps the hat secure in the wind, while the flexible brim offers consistent coverage without feeling stiff. It packs down small and works well when you need some protection from the elements, before you need the full protection of a hood.
