Our Verdict
The Buckstone Hoody is a lightweight, warm midlayer at 334g (Medium), using high-loft PrimaLoft Active Evolve insulation that allows air to move freely through the fabric. When working hard uphill, it lets heat escape quickly, keeping temperature and moisture under control, yet it remains warm as conditions cool. The fabric is incredibly soft, with a relaxed cut that layers easily over a base layer or under a shell.
The wind passes through the main panels, so pairing it with a wind or rain shell provides full protection on exposed ridges. Reinforcements on the sleeves and around the hood add welcome abrasion resistance, helping the insulation maintain its loft and resist snags. The smaller hand pockets are positioned well for use with a pack, though they could be more generous for cold hands.
Breathability, comfort and simplicity are the Buckstone’s strengths. It works particularly well for steady movement in cold climates or as a midlayer for all-season mountain use.
