Our Verdict
At 267g for a Medium, the Rab Borealis Alpine Hoody comfortably fits into the lightweight softshell category, but it doesn’t feel insubstantial. The updated Matrix fabric has a nice balance of stretch and wind resistance and dries quickly if you’re working hard or caught in light drizzle. It’s cut slim but still fits well over a light base layer, and the tailoring moves well with the body without riding up under a harness or pack.
The under-helmet hood is simple but effective, and the single chest pocket is well placed, doubling as a stuff sack without fuss. Cuffs and hem are elasticated for a clean, no-frills finish, which suits the minimalist design. Light, breathable and just enough protection for big days on rock, ridge or trail.
