Montane GR Sun Cap Review
Extensively tested and reviewed by Trek Scotland throughout May to October in the Cairngorms, Glen Affric, Glen Coe and surrounding mountainous areas.
The addition of a cap in the outdoors often becomes a handy piece of clothing. They provide protection from the sun, deflect light rainfall, whilst also adding a bit of rigidity when pairing with a lightweight jacket with a basic hood. We are big fans of this type of headwear so were eager to try out Montane’s GR Sun Cap.
As the name suggests this is a cap aimed at protection from the sun. The GR is made up of a lightweight ripstop polyester fabric outer with UPF 50+ sun protection. A skeletal structure offers plenty of airflow keeping your head nice and cool. Weighing in at a mere 55 grams it’s extremely lightweight whilst also being super packable. A split peak means the GR folds up tightly and will fit in most small pockets. The peak has been slightly extended which offers not only great protection from the sun but also light showers. A coolmax internal headband is comfortable and the anti-odour treatment means that after a few days on the hills the Montane GR keeps a build-up of moisture to a minimum. The rear adjustment is a simple Velcro tab that offers a great fit and security even in high winds.
Our Verdict
Having used the Montane GR Sun Cap throughout the past 6 months it’s come in handy on many occasions. On days when the sun was bright and warm the GR gave great protection against UV rays whilst also keeping our head nice and cool. The star of the show is the skeletal stricture that allows excellent airflow whilst also being able to be folded and stashed away in an easy to hand pocket. On days of light rain-fall we didn’t need to worry about the GR getting soaked as the lightweight polyester fabric with a DWR finish kept moisture retention to a minimum. The fit is nice and secure and overall comfort is great. The addition of an extended peak is a great design choice from Montane. Although we don’t mind the styling taking a simple one colour approach, this may be an area where many might have wanted more choice as there is only Black or Stone Grey currently available.
