Waterproof Down Jackets for Cold, Wet Conditions.
Winter weather often brings rain, sleet, snow, freezing temperatures, and low-visibility conditions such as fog. Staying comfortable outdoors requires protection from both the cold and the wet. Waterproof down jackets provide dependable insulation and weather protection throughout autumn and winter.
Rab uses their expertise in technical shells and insulated outerwear to create jackets that perform in changing weather conditions. Waterproof down jackets combine down insulation with waterproof outer fabrics for warmth and protection in cold, wet conditions. This makes them a practical option for winter walking, hiking, travel, and everyday outdoor use.
Rab & Grangers’ Down Defend®
Grangers Down DefendR is a bluepass approved hydrophobic down treatment that helps keep down lofted in damp conditions. It gives the down over 375x more durability than untreated down, extending the lifespan of your product. It achieves a shake test result of at least 2000 minutes for recycled down and 15000 minutes for virgin down. It also improves the fill power of the down by up to 5%, overall keeping you warmer, for longer.
This treatment helps the down maintain its loft, so it can continue trapping warmth when moisture is present. The result is a rainproof down jacket that continues to provide warmth in damp and wet conditions.
The Responsible Down Standard
Rab are certified to the Responsible Down Standard, certified by Control Union CB-CUC-839597. The Responsible Down Standard (RDS) independently certifies down and feathers against animal welfare requirements and tracks it from farm to final product.
What is Hydrophobic Down?
Down, a natural fibre produced by waterfowl, has a certain degree of water repellency. However, over time or in very damp conditions, moisture can saturate the fine fibres that contribute to down's effectiveness. This can cause the fibres to clump together, diminishing down's insulating properties.
Why Down Fill Power Matters
Fill power measures the loft and insulating performance of down insulation. Higher fill power down expands more efficiently, trapping warm air while keeping weight to a minimum. This helps waterproof down jackets provide warmth without excessive bulk, supporting a wide range of outdoor activities.
Choosing the Right Waterproof Down Jacket
The best waterproof down jacket depends on how and where it is used. Lightweight waterproof down jackets are suitable for everyday wear, demanding hikes, and fast-moving activities. Their low weight and compact design make them easy to carry and suited to active use. Jackets with higher fill power insulation and box wall constructions provide increased warmth in sub-zero temperatures and bitter winds.
Many waterproof down jackets use high-quality down with either 700 fill power or 800 fill power. Higher fill power down provides excellent warmth while keeping weight to a minimum. Combined with a waterproof outer fabric, this creates a practical solution for wet weather and low temperatures.
An adjustable hood, secure pockets, and a durable outer layer help improve comfort in poor weather.
