The Key Differences
Despite the 2 jackets having similar names and using the same technology, there are actually a few details that make them better suited to different environments. The Alpine 850 Hoodie is only filled with an extra 30 grams of down and is around 100g heavier than the lite version. But this, paired with Box wall baffle construction, makes it warmer and better suited to freezing mountain conditions or when you are not so active in the cold. The Alpine Lite Down Hoodie is a more packable layer that will see constant use throughout the cold season, on the hills or at home on the commute.
Technology
ALLIED’s HyperDRY™ Water Resistant Down allows the Alpine 850 Down range to provide extreme performance in unpredictable conditions. Regular untreated down can wet-out and struggle to retain warmth when wet, HyperDRY™ down is incredibly hydrophobic, helping prevent the down structure from collapsing due to absorbing water. This allows the down to retain its loft and warmth for longer when damp, while also allowing it to dry much quicker.
The treatment of the down works in the same way as traditional DWR’s. HyperDRY™ is entirely fluorocarbon-free and has been designed to utilise less water and chemical processing compared to traditional treatments.
850+ Fill Power. Maximum Warmth at Minimal Weight
The fill power measurement in down tells us how much loft and strength the down clusters have, and therefore how much air (and warmth) they can trap. With a 850+ fill power the down utilised in the Alpine 850 provides exceptional warmth for the weight, utilising larger down clusters that are capable of trapping more air.
