Our Verdict
Montane's Alpine 850 Lite Down Hoodie, is designed as a super lightweight Down jacket for all activities that offers one of the best fill weights compared to the overall weight of the jacket, keeping you warm without unnecessary weight.
The Alpine uses an 850 fill and has a very impressive fill weight of 140g which is very high for a jacket that weights just over 300g, this means that it produces a lot of warmth per gram. Montane use of the Pertex Quantum Eco shell means that the Alpine has a reasonable level of water resistance for a down jacket, but it is a super lightweight outer that helps to keep the weight down
The fit is on the slimer technical side so is perfect for a base-layer and thin mid layer combination, for use as an outer if you are moving fast and light. The addition of a shell on top makes this a great choice as a mid-layer for colder conditions if you need maximum manoeuvrability, and you don't want to be restricted by a larger down jacket. The hood is a basic but gives a good fit without need for adjustment
Features wise the light weight nature of the jacket means that they are kept to a minimum in order to save weight, so there are a couple of front zip pockets and some internal pockets.
