Berghaus MTN Arete Ultra Down Hood

Posted by Trek & Mountain Review on Mar 01, 2023

With the relaunch of the Extrem 'sub brand' this winter, Berghaus have created a range of mountain-focused apparel that is clearly distinct from the more mainstream products that are its bread and butter these days. The MTN Arete Ultra Down Hoody has certainly been designed with the mountaineer in mind, this being reflected in many of its features. The helmet-compatible hood has a wired peak, plus a single volume adjustor at the rear, so can accommodate a helmet or be cinched down around your face when not wearing one. Its pockets are 'Guide approved' intended to stay out of the way of straps when wearing pack and harness; there's two hand pockets quite high up. and a single chest pocket, while on the inside of the jacket there's two mesh dump pockets for stashing drinks bottles or gloves. As for the insulation of the jacket itself. Berghaus have opted for three different types of baffles in different areas of the jacket. In the main body, where the most warmth is needed, there's offset baffles to eliminate cold spots with a reflective layer to retain heat. At the sides and under the arms there's stitch-through baffles and micro-baffles which allow some breathability and are also less bulky which means greater freedom of movement. In use of the MTN
Arete Down Hoody ticks all the boxes; it's fabric is very soft but with its reinforced areas feels that it will prove durable even when rubbing against rock and ice. The designs feels very well thought- but, with double main zipper (go for harnesses and comfort breaks), and elasticated cuffs with velcro tabs to keep drafts out. plenty of pockets and  excellent adjustment on the hood which really comes into its own in windy or snowy
conditions. Overall this is a really strong product.

VERDICT
Well-featured down jacket that's especially suited to mountaineering
