The Basin Sun Hoodie is for those looking for feather-light sun protection. We love this fabric for its weight, for resistance and extremely lightness. Though quite delicate due to its ultralight properties, this hoodie can last a full thru-hike and more, as demonstrated in the prototyping stage last year!
Use case and fit: These hoodies are ideal for keeping the sun off in the heat of the summer when you’d like to feel like you’re wearing nothing at all! They feature a deep hood, casual fit, and four distinct colorways.
Fabric tech: The Basin Sun Hoodie is made from an ultralight version of Polartec© Delta™ fabric, which provides UPF 15 sun protection (blocking 93% of UV rays) and is designed to keep you cool by dispersing moisture away from the skin, improving breathability and minimizing cling from sweat. It is essentially a fine mesh, allowing for air to pass through easily. Of course this also means it’s a bit less protective than the Coastal and Alpine Sun Hoodies, as they use heavier, more robust fabrics.
Our Verdict
The Basin Sun Hoodie is one of the few layers I kept reaching for, even when other options were available. I wore it for almost the entire TGO, slept in it regularly, washed it in sinks when needed, and it still stayed impressively fresh. The Polartec Delta fabric is the real highlight: soft, airy and noticeably less clingy than most lightweight synthetics once damp with sweat.
At 170g (Medium), it feels almost effortless to wear, and the relaxed fit and deep hood make long hot days far more comfortable. The fabric does need a bit of care, and the UPF 15 rating is lower than many sun-focused layers, but the cooling performance and next-to-skin comfort are outstanding. For hot-weather thru-hiking and high-mileage walking, this IS my go-to.
