The Aerotherm combines lightweight warmth, windproofness and breathability in a versatile mountain jacket.
Mountain Equipment says:
For many of our staff and team members, the Aerotherm Jacket is their go-to item for fast-paced mountain days in moderate weather. It’s one of the most versatile jackets in our range because it meets the demands of almost any mountain activity. It seamlessly combines wicking capability with windproof protection to create a layer you can wear all day, whether running, hiking or climbing.
The Aerotherm uses a windproof EXOLITE 45 double weave soft shell for its outer layer. Lightweight, breathable and with a slight stretch, this is an ideal protective fabric to keep the wind at bay while still being comfortable and mobile. Inside the jacket, a soft and highly wicking micro-grid lining efficiently draws away moisture during focused uphill efforts, wicking away sweat and preventing discomfort. This layer also provides some valuable warmth on exposed summits and ridgelines. Together, these layers dry exceptionally quickly and help keep you comfortable in changeable mountain conditions and through stop-start activity.
Designed with a slim, Active fit to minimise excess fabric, the Aerotherm layers well under a waterproof shell when necessary. It can be adjusted at the hem using a drawcord to fine-tune fit, and the cuffs are elastane-bound to keep the wind out. An adjustable Mountain Hood with an elasticated border offers secure protection when running or in strong winds, but can be rolled away when unnecessary. The microgrid lining is reversed throughout the arms to prevent catching or binding with other layers, and the articulated sleeves are unrestrictive during technical scrambling and climbing. Zipped hand pockets and a chest pocket store essentials, and the jacket packs neatly into its hand pocket with twin carry loops for easy carrying in a pack or on a harness.
Our Verdict
At 292g (Medium), the Aerotherm Hooded Jacket is a light active layer for cool, changeable conditions. The EXOLITE 45 outer gives useful wind resistance and light weather protection, while the micro-grid lining adds a little warmth and helps move moisture when you are working hard.
I like it most as a layer you can keep on as effort levels shift, rather than constantly switching between a fleece and a shell. The full zip, elasticated cuffs, and hem drawcords make temperature and fit easy to manage, while the articulated sleeves enhance movement.
The pocket layout is practical, with two zipped hand pockets and a chest pocket, and it packs into its own pocket with karabiner loops.
