Our Verdict
At 144g (UK 12), the Patagonia 2026 Capilene Midweight Crew provides noticeably more insulation without feeling overly bulky beneath a fleece or waterproof. The recycled-polyester double knit has a soft inner and smooth outer face, helping it manage moisture while allowing other layers to move freely over the top.
The fit works well without feeling compressive, while the raglan shoulders, underarm gussets and low-bulk seams keep movement unrestricted and reduce rubbing beneath a rucksack. I also like the thumb loops, which add useful hand coverage and help keep the sleeves in place when layering.
It is warm enough for colder walks but remains breathable during steady climbs, making it a reliable choice for winter hiking, backpacking and general cold-weather use.
