Very light, well-vented, and stripped-back helmet.
Grivel says:
Mutant is an ultra lightweight helmet for mountaineering and climbing
Expanded polypropylene (EPP) construction provides effective impact absorption with reduced weight, while an ABS reinforcement on the top increases resistance in high-exposure zones. Its structure protects both the top and sides of the head while maintaining consistent airflow.
A minimal adjustment system reduces bulk and allows compact storage. Multiple sizes ensure a precise fit.
Stripped-back protection for fast alpine movement.
Our Verdict
For me, the Mutant's standout feature is how little weight you carry for a proper mountaineering helmet. At 174g (Medium), it combines an EPP shell with ABS reinforcement over the crown, giving a good balance of low weight, ventilation and useful protection.
The 2026 version also adds a Medium size and a lighter, more compact adjustment system, improving fit options without adding bulk. The trade-off is that the minimal webbing harness is more fiddly to adjust than a conventional rear dial, so getting the right shell size matters.
Ventilation is a real strength, and I like that Grivel has still kept proper headtorch retention. It is a very focused design, but one that makes sense for climbing and mountaineering where low weight matters throughout the day.
