This weather-resistant little wonder has been on our “list of essentials” for nearly a decade. Perfectly minimal, the Houdini can be stuffed and put into a running short pocket, clipped to a harness, or become a permanent fixture in a pack or carry-on. 100% nylon ripstop fabric blocks wind and a DWR (durable water repellent) coating protects against light precipitation. Slim fit accommodates baselayers and light midlayers. It’s the emergency layer you don’t know is there, until it’s not.
Our Verdict
Patagonia's Houdini Jacket is a super-light wind jacket. Weighing in at 100g it keeps features to a minimum to achieve this weight. However, it still has a small zipped chest pocket which doubles as a stuff sack along with adjustable hood and hem with small draw cords to get the fit right for the conditions. Part elasticated cuffs also help with this fit without restricting movement.
The Houdini jacket is surprisingly comfortable next to the skin considering how light it is. It is perfect for trail runners but is useful to anyone heading to the hills for throwing over a mid layer to keep out the wind. The nylon fabric is 100% recycled which is a fantastic Eco bonus typical of Patagonia's ethos.
