MSR says
The hybrid-fuel WhisperLite Universal stove delivers the ease and simmering capabilities of canister fuel, and switches easily over to liquid fuels for longer trips, cold-weather, and international use. Our patent-pending AirControl™ technology is what really makes it unique, delivering outstanding performance with all compatible fuels. It’s also the lightest stove in its class, offering excellent stability and easy maintenance, adding to the reasons this could be the only stove you’ll ever need.
Our Verdict
Whisperlite is almost generic when it comes to liquid fuel stoves a real classic. This latest vesrion has a couple of minor modifications which will not detract from its performance as a liquid fuel stove. However the main change is the addition of an adaptor and jet assembly to enable the stove to run on gas canister fuel.
The main advantages of gas canisters are cleanliness and convenience running your stove on gas means its easier to light and doesn`t need the same level of maintenance than a liquid fuel stove. The main disadvantage however is fuel availability - if there are no gas canisters to buy then you need a stove that burns the fuel thats available - which could be unleaded petrol or kerosene.
This makes the Whisperlite Universal a good choice for round the world adventures where fuel types will be various. In order to burn different types of fuel the jet has to be changed and to move between gas canister and liquid fuels requires using a different adaptor at the fuel end of the hose. Both changes are quick and simple.
As with all multifuel stoves if you only burn the purest fuel they work well and are very reliable when lots of different fuels are used care is required to maintain the stove adequately.
