Our Verdict
Altras has taken everything we love about the Timp 5 and swaddled it in a Gore-tex membrane, making this well-cushioned and robust lone peak alternative fully waterproof.
The Timp GTX's 29mm stack height and updated EGO MAX midsole provide better energy return, resulting in a more cushioned and bouncy step, similar to that of the Hoka Speed Goat. This reduces foot fatigue, especially on longer road sections and compact trails.
The Timp GTX uses the same Vibram sole as its non-waterproof counterpart. The Vibram sole offers superior grip and durability and performs well on various terrains and in wet or dry conditions.
The Timp's toe box is more "natural" than the Lone Peaks, resulting in a slightly narrower fit. Based on feedback from others, including Altra, it is recommended to consider sizing up in the Timp about half a size.
