UOG TOP PICK: Warm, durable, and impressively light, the Outdoor Research SuperStrand XT refines a synthetic favourite into a tougher, more versatile layer—a top pick for cold, active days.
Outdoor Research says:
The SuperStrand XT Hoodie rugged and warmer version of our best-selling SuperStrand LT Collection, designed for lightweight warmth and insulation in cold, variable conditions—perfect for alpine climbs, backcountry tours, or brisk trail days.
Engineered with advanced VerticalX™ ECO and SuperStrand™ insulation, this technical hoodie offers exceptional warmth-to-weight performance, staying breathable and functional during high-output activities. The torso features 15% more insulation than the LT Hoodie for added core warmth, while the Pertex Quantum NetPlus® shell—crafted from recycled fishing nets—delivers windproof, water-resistant protection. Thoughtful design details, like an insulated hood with a brim, a drawcord-adjustable hem, and zippered hand and chest pockets, ensure a secure fit and easy access to essentials. Plus, the left-hand pocket doubles as a stuff sack for easy packing.
Whether layering up for a cold day at the resort or gearing up for an extended adventure, the SuperStrand XT Hoodie combines technical performance with lightweight warmth, so you can keep moving forward, no matter the conditions.
Our Verdict
At 343 g (Medium), the SuperStrand XT builds on the original LT with added warmth and tougher detailing. I was a massive fan of the LT, so I was keen to try this updated version, and I’m really pleased that Outdoor Research has added a drawcord hem, something the earlier model lacked.
The XT utilises the same VerticalX SuperStrand insulation, but with approximately 15% more fill through the torso, providing noticeably better warmth in cold, still conditions while retaining a low weight. The Pertex Quantum NetPlus shell, made from recycled fishing nets, feels more robust than the LT’s ultra-thin fabric and shrugs off light moisture and wind.
The fit remains athletic, with just enough room for a mid-layer. The new hood design, featuring a small brim, improves coverage, and the additional chest pocket provides storage. Breathability is slightly lower than the LT, but comfort and protection in cooler weather are significantly enhanced.
