For side sleepers seeking a balance between comfort and packability, the Sea to Summit Pursuit Self-Inflating Mat offers a thoughtful design that caters to various sleeping positions.
Sea to Summit says:
Designed for backpackers / adventurers who prioritise weight/ packed volume but who prefer simple SI construction over more complex air sleeping pads. The Pursuit is available in Contour or Rectangular shapes
Our Verdict
Weighing 583g, this is impressively light for a self-inflating mat. This mat employs Horizontal Delta Coring to remove 40% of the foam, creating supportive air-filled channels that enhance comfort while reducing weight and packed volume. The Contour shape provides additional width at the shoulders, offering more room for side sleepers without the added weight of a full rectangular mat.
The XPEL Valve System simplifies inflation and deflation. Its flip-over design prevents air from re-entering during deflation, making packing more straightforward. While the mat is lightweight, it doesn't compress as tightly as some ultralight airbeds, but it's impressive just how small this self-inflating mat compresses.

ASTM R-Value:
From 2020, there is a new industry standard for measuring the R-value (level of insulation) of sleeping mats – ASTM F3340-18. This new standard is the sleeping mat equivalent to the EN rating for sleeping bags.
You can now directly compare the R-value of mats rated using the ASTM F3340-18 with confidence that is a fair and accurate comparison between mats. In simple terms, the higher the R-value, the warmer the mat.
In general terms, an R-value below 2.0 is for summer use, 2.0 to 4.0 is for cooler 3 season use and 4.0+ is for winter temperatures. This will be also be dependent on your sleeping bag, how cold you sleep etc. Please contact our customer service team if you need advice on choosing the right mat for your activity.
