The 'updated' Phantom is more like a new pack redesigned for those with a smaller frame. Still focusing on ultralight materials to give you a race-ready pack, this has a large capacity and loads of additional storage options. The vest pack style harness makes it much more comfortable for multiday epics through enjoyable walks in the hills.
OMM says:
All the features of the much loved original Phantom, just with a reduced main volume and shorter back length. Featuring our suspension system multi point harness actively stabilising the pack whilst on the move. Adjustable back length & carbon fibre back frame transfers weight to hips for heavier load carry.
Our Verdict
OMM's Phantom 18 Rucksack provides you with a super lightweight pack with a large capacity and a comfortable fit for those with a smaller frame. The simple large compartment and single zip pocket work well for storing kit you don't need access to, while the gear loops and gear rail give you additional storage options.
The main change is the vest pack front. Adapting the Trailfire Vest design, they have created a close-fitting, comfortable design that is easily adjusted and works as well for day trips out in the hills through to multiday mountain races. The Vest straps give you some decent storage options, although I preferred two drinks pockets rather than one and a random (small) stretch mesh pocket. The design does improve comfort and reduces the risk of the pack bouncing when you get it fully adjusted to you and the kit you are carrying.
