Our Verdict
The Montbell Permafrost jacket is a full windproof lightweight down jacket that is designed to cover a lot of bases so is useful for a large range of activities.
The Permafrost uses the Gore-Tex infinium membrane in order to create a windproof outer that helps to keep the warmth in and generate a really good warmth to weight ratio with the 800 fill-power. While not the highest fill weight the Permafrost can act as both a outer later due to the Infinium keeping the wind out, and also a mid layer as a shell fits quite comfortably over the top and there is no restriction of movement.
Features wise the Permafrost comes with two good sized pockets on the front, is adjustable via a elasticated cord on the bottom of the jacket and some internal non zipped pockets.
As for the fit I found to be good size so there is room for a couple of layers underneath again making it a good outer-layer for dryer conditions, but not too big meaning that it is also a good choice as a mid layer in combination with a base layer.
If you are looking for a lighter weight down jacket than has multiple fuctions then the Permafrost is definitely a great choice, given it's wind proof outer and its ability to keep you warm.
