Our Verdict
The Outdoor Research Helium UL Vestibule adds usability to the Helium UL Bivy without straying from its fast-and-light approach. At 160g, plus 10g per peg, it provides sheltered space for boots, a pack, and simple camp tasks while keeping overall weight down.
The 15D silicone-coated nylon feels appropriately robust for its intended role and sheds rain effectively when pitched taut. Designed around a single trekking pole, the setup is straightforward and integrates neatly with the bivy’s barrel attachment system. Once tensioned, it creates a noticeably more liveable entrance, allowing the main zip to remain partially open for ventilation while still protected from rain.
The extra covered area makes gear management far easier in poor weather and adds welcome headspace at the doorway. The vestibule is compact enough to carry when conditions are uncertain, significantly improving the comfort and practicality of this minimalist shelter.
