Light, warm, and dialled in for fast, minimalist travel in cooler months, this quilt earns its place in a refined kit.

Hyperlite Mountain Gear says:

Loaded with 1000-fill power down and sewn into a durable 7d micro ripstop nylon exterior shell, the 20-Degree Quilt is warm, comfortable, incredibly light, and highly packable. One of our two quilt offerings, the 20-Degree Quilt is the perfect ultralight backpacking quilt for cooler, shoulder-season temperatures.

Our Verdict

Hyperlite Mountain Gear’s 20-Degree Quilt hits a sweet spot for minimalist sleep systems in colder conditions. At just 579g for the regular size, it delivers reliable warmth thanks to 398g of 1000-fill down that lofts quickly and resists collapse in damp air. The three-dimensional baffle construction means that down, and therefore heat, stays where it should. The footbox is stitched shut, which cuts out draughts, but does limit venting if you’re prone to overheating.

The shell fabric is incredibly light, but it’s thin enough that I’d be extra cautious with it around rough ground. The pad attachment system is simple and functional. There’s just enough room across the shoulders for a relaxed sleep without feeling restricted and the neck closure is well designed and does a good job of sealing in warmth.

One thing that’s a little disappointing is that the quilt doesn’t come with a dedicated stuff sack, which feels like an oversight.

You’d need a well-insulated mat to push this to its claimed -6°C, I’d be comfortable using it to around -1. It would be good for spring and autumn trips where pack weight matters, but comfort can’t be compromised.
