A footprint can protect your tent and boost versatility—but whether it’s worth carrying depends on your ground, your route, and your priorities.
Terra Nova says
Although we are confident that our Terra Nova products will outperform any similar groundsheet fabric available, we recommend the use of a footprint to provide increased protection against sharp objects.
Our Verdict
Most manufacturers recommend using a footprint to extend the life of your tent’s groundsheet. But if you’ve just bought an ultralight shelter, do you really want to carry the extra weight?
Our take: bring one if you expect to camp on rough or abrasive ground, or if you’re heading out on a multi-day trip where you won’t always know what kind of surface you’ll be pitching on. Some footprints also add versatility, letting you pitch just the fly and footprint for an ultralight setup—so in those cases, they’re doing more than just protecting your groundsheet; they’re part of your overall shelter system.
