Our Verdict
As soon as you put these shoes on, you instantly notice how light they are but also, how supportive they feel. I’m a big fan of this new addition to include a “sock” or knit collar, that hugs the ankle, this means they work as a gaiter and also as a support sock and the VC22 has the most impressive “sock” I’ve encountered. It hugs well without being constrictive (that being said they are a bit of a struggle to get on the first time, but once on feel great) and it descends further down the ankle than any boot I’ve come across. This adds a lot more breathability, but also feels less restrictive than a traditional boot. However, they do not lack the support of a traditional boot, thanks to the gusseted sock design, the Mid Ankle support is able to support the ankle with out constricting it.
Most Gore-Tex boots will always run a little hot, but thanks to the Gore-Tex Extended Comfort membrane within the stretchy mesh tongue, your feet, as stated above, can stay cool. The rest upper of the boot is constructed from an incredibly durable rip-stop polyester, so you know its strong but also great at shedding water and dirt.
The sole of the boot is flat with, Omni-directional lugs made from Vibram rubber, a hard-working rubber that gives a phenomenal grip on all terranes, even in wet weather. As mentioned the soul of the boot is flat, which allows force to be evenly spread through the foot, allowing for maximal force production.
Weight has clearly been a factor in the design of the boot, as it has been kept under 500g per shoe (based on a UK size8) which is remarkable for such a durable boot. Fans of a traditional boot whishing to lighten their load, really should give these boots a look.
