Our Verdict
The Rab Sonic Hoody is a lightweight, technical mid-layer designed for active mountain pursuits. It is made from Rab's Motiv Aero fabric and excels at wicking moisture and drying quickly to keep you comfortable during high-output activities.
Primarily, I use this piece as a base layer in sunny weather. However, it can also function as a mid-layer on cooler days. It provides insulation and sun protection and works with your base layer to wick moisture away from your body. It is a highly versatile layer that is especially well-suited for multi-day hikes.
The soft, stretchy fabric has a subtle mesh texture that enhances breathability. Underarm gussets and a trim, athletic cut allow uninhibited mobility. Hidden thumb loops help seal out drafts. And the close-fitting hood adds warm-when-wanted protection.
Despite its lightweight 119-138g construction, the Sonic Hoody provides a valuable barrier against cool mountain air and wind. The odour-resistant treatment helps it stay fresher longer between washes.
While ultra-minimal, intelligent features like a deep zip guard, low-bulk seams, and stretchy cuffs enhance on-trail functionality. When temperatures drop, it easily layers under a shell or insulated jacket.
