Our Verdict
One for the intrepid, the Montbell Down Balaclava weighs just 83 grams but provides an invaluable boost of warmth on winter camps. It works well with a sleeping bag but really shines if you are using a hoodless bag or quilt. The outer Ballistic Airlight nylon has been treated with a DWR to help protect the down from light snow or precipitation, but this is a piece that will primarily be used inside the tent.
The 800-fill-power down lofts well to retain heat and compresses down small into its own provided stuff sack. The hood can be adjusted via two points: a cord cinch around the crown and a hook-and-loop volume adjustment, allowing you to tailor the fit and prevent the hood from slipping as you sleep.
