Gossamer Gear says:
Super lightweight and hauls juuuust enough for fast and light multi-day treks or ultralight overnights.
Features are focused. The frameless design and lightest-in-category hardware and compression shed weight, while the recycled Robic nylon fabric is super tough and amazingly light.
Our Verdict
In the 30-40 liter range, Gossamer Gear's Kumo 36 Superlight Rucksack is one of the lightest backpacks available. Although it sacrifices some durability to achieve this lightness, it still has a plethora of useful features. In order to align with Gossamer Gear's 2024 product line, the bag has undergone a redesign. It now features a lightweight and enduring 70D Recycled Robic Nylon. Key wear-and-tear areas have been strategically reinforced for increased durability with 100D Robic Nylon.
The bag has a roll-top closure, but it also includes a pair of clips to narrow the entrance, followed by a top that folds down and is secured with compression straps to keep the contents secure. The folded-over top has a zippered pocket. Adjustable chest straps and removable hip belts are included, with zippered pockets for storing essentials while on the move. The shoulder straps are generously padded and have handy small mesh pockets for items like energy gels.
The Kumo also includes two side pockets that can accommodate water bottles and a large mesh pocket for additional storage. Both side panels have shock cord compression straps. There's also a lashing loop that could be used as an ice axe holder, though I'm not sure how effective it would be.
Despite lacking a rigid support structure, the comfortable foam back panel can be quickly removed and used as a sit mat or sleeping pad. Considering its features, this pack is incredibly lightweight and versatile.
