Our Verdict
I’m a very recent convert to z-poles, having always used a more traditional pole in the past, they are definitely a game-changer for me. The main draw for me is how packable they are, they are able to stuff in to a side pocket of your pack as opposed to traditional poles that need to be stashed on the outside, but what put me off in the past was that they were not adjustable.
However, these black diamond poles offer the best of both worlds, a 3-section z-pole design, with an adjustable section at the top, meaning you get the adaptability on the trail, and the portability on your way to the trail.
They are incredibly light and feel great in the hand all day, the strap is breathable and adjusts very easily. They are incredibly strong and I have no hesitation putting my full weight on the poles, even with a full backpack
For me, the main selling point is the adjustability of the pole, when I’m backpacking, I almost always take a trekking pole tent like the Luna Solo, so having the ability to adjust my pitch is key, especially in bad weather.
