Patagonia Micro Puff Jacket Review - Ultralight Outdoor Gear

May 05, 2022

Worn as a daytime synthetic layer on a backpacking trip in late September to Switzerland, the micro puff seems to be one of the lightest insulated jackets around. I carry a down jacket against the evening chill but a light synthetic for daytime, and as I’m normally on the move I don’t need too much to keep me warm.

The Micro Puff is ideal for the job and I was really impressed by how warm it kept me at lunch stops etc given its low weight and extremely low packed size.

I like the length of the jacket which drops to cover the top of my bum at the back, the arms are long enough and when zipped fully the collar doesn’t feel obstructive. It’s a close-fitting piece but doesn’t feel restrictive.

I love the two large inside pockets though you can put too much in them making the jacket appear bulky and awkward.

There are two zipped hand pockets (one of which is used as a stuffsack) which are always useful on a jacket designed to keep you warm, so you can shove your hands in for a quick warm-up. The build quality is excellent though the fabrics are necessarily lightweight and care is needed to ensure durability.
