Haglofs Mid Touring Jacket Review - Trek Scotland

Posted by Trek Scotland on Apr 14, 2022

The Haglofs Mid Touring jacket is a technical piece of clothing aimed for use in the colder months, working as either a mid-layer or a stand-alone outer layer for calmer days.

In terms of stylings the Mid touring jacket certainly stands out, with us receiving a colour mix of blue and green, clearly highlighting the two separate forms of insulation used. There’s no denying this is a great looking piece of clothing, the fit hugs the body, well-proportioned with plenty of length in the arms and back.

Made with a mix of Polartec Power Stretch fleece (green) and Polartec Alpha (blue), Haglofs have divided the Mid Touring jacket into sections that prioritise warmth, high breathability, and freedom of movement.

We have been big fans of Polartec Alpha in the past and found the slightly heavier weight of 136 g/m² used here to be perfect for regulating body warmth throughout the colder months including high paced activities throughout the depths of winter. The low density knit impressed us efficiently wicking away moisture which carries on performing when placed underneath multiple layers. Breathability is excellent, with us placing the Mid Touring jacket as close to the body as possible usually just above a thin baselayer. After a long days climb never did we feel uncomfortable or clammy with the only noticeable areas in which a bit of dampness may occur being located on our back if carrying a heavier pack.

Polartec Power Stretch forms a more rugged structure with impressive elasticity making for a perfect partner to Polartec Alpha. The weight to warmth ratio and breathability might not be quite as impressive as the rest of the jacket but what you get in return is full freedom of movement and improved durability. The large section on the back can handle the heavier weight pack needed for winter expeditions, whilst the lower arms didn’t have us worried that the fabric would break apart after a few brushes against ice and rock.

It could be argued that with one small chest pocket there’s not much in the way of storage options when used as an outer layer, and yes you do search for areas to store gloves or place a map at times. We found this simpler approach to focus towards the performance of the material used, with less overlapping fabric in areas creating an unbalance in breathability. During the colder months unless moving quickly on steep ground or on particularly calm days, the Touring jacket will mostly be placed under another layer with improved pocket space.

With a weight of just over 400 grams in a size medium it can be considered a fairly lightweight and compact piece of clothing that doesn’t take up much space amongst our pack. Although due to its versatility we found the Mid touring jacket would be worn mostly all the time. It’s obviously not great for use in high windspeeds or when the weather takes a turn for the worst, although placed under a shell jacket or larger insulating jacket the streamlined approach makes for an extremely comfortable option for all day use.

Our Verdict
Haglofs Mid Touring jacket has been for us the most accomplished piece of clothing we have worn throughout the colder months, using it on everything from big mountain days, to walks in the woods with the family. Well fitting, solid build, with a well thought out design. The mix of Polartec Alpha and Polartec Power Stretch offering high insulation and excellent breathability, to efficiently control body warmth. Although a good looking piece of clothing, Haglofs have certainly built the Mid Touring jacket with performance in mind. Used as either part of a larger layering system throughout the harsh colder months or as an outer layer for calmer weather, it quickly became a firm favourite amongst our guides.
