The UltaMid 4 Half Insert creates a barrier against bugs and moisture for two people inside the UltaMid 4 Shelter, so a restful night of sleep is more likely assured wherever home is for the night. Use the other side to protect and store all the gear on dry ground or our Ground Cloth if moisture is a concern. The Half Insert is also an excellent option for separating muddy gear from slightly cleaner sleep systems or clothes. Our Verdict
The Hyperlite Mountain Gear UltaMid 4 Mesh Half Insert with DCF Floor is a versatile addition to the UltaMid 4 shelter. This insert is explicitly designed for two adventurers or soloists seeking more room. It provides a bug-free, dry sleeping area on one side of the tent, leaving the other free for storing gear. Weighing just 519 grams, it’s a lightweight solution that offers excellent protection against moisture and insects.
The floor is made from durable Dyneema Composite Fabric, which is fully waterproof and robust enough to handle rougher ground. For me, the option to transition between a simple tarp setup and a more protective insert makes this a flexible piece of kit.
Although it adds some weight to the shelter system, the UltaMid 4 Mesh Half Insert strikes an outstanding balance between comfort and practicality for ultralight backpackers tackling buggy or damp conditions.
