UOG TOP PICK—Exped's Ultra -5° Down Sleeping Bag offers warmth due to its 850 down fill and H baffles. It has a hood with an adjustable neck guard, reversible zip pull, and an inner pocket for extra protection. The bag provides ample shoulder room while minimising cold spots. It's one of our top picks for cold weather
Exped says:
The Ultra –5° and Ultra –10° are extremely lightweight, compact three-season sleeping bags. They are aimed at trekkers, long-distance hikers and bivouacers who do not want to compromise on equipment and all users who are looking for an extremely lightweight sleeping bag with the widest possible range of use. With the Ultra –5° and – 0°, the weight of the equipment can be kept to an absolute minimum – the Ultra –5° in size M weighs a meagre 770 grams.
Their insulation is of the finest, RDS-certified, 850 cu. in. goose down gives them excellent, evenly-distributed thermal performance. The all-round, H-shaped down chambers allow the down to be "shaken upwards" if necessary - Exped's downshift function. This allows the heat distribution to be optimised in just a few steps and adapted to the individual's metabolism, the sleeping mat used and the outside temperature. While the Ultra insulates to –5° or –6°, the extreme temperature of the Ultra ranges -10° to -11 degrees. This duo can be relied on one hundred percent in any situation.
Like their warmer colleagues, the Ultra –5° and Ultra –10° have the elaborately constructed, comfortable triangle foot box, while the zipper cover also prevents prevents heat loss in this critical area. The adjustable, elliptical thermal collar literally hugs the neck and reduces drafts and heat loss to a minimum.
Our Verdict
Exped's Ultra -5° Down Sleeping Bag is new to our range and follows in a long line of top quality Exped proucts, with a high level of inovation and a focus on quality materials to create something that is lightweight and will last.
The Ultra -5° is filled with a high quality 850 down that offers a high level of warmth due to the way that is distributed across the bag in the H baffles that prevent the down from clumping or being displaced from the sides keeping a very even level of warmth throughout the whole bag.
There are quite a few different features on the Ultra such as the hood that has a very good range of adjustment, that allows a close fit with a neck guard that keeps maximum heat in, or a more relaxed fit to get a pillow in. There are poppers inside the top of the bag that again help you create a good seal to stop heat loss. There is a reversable zip pull so you can get in and out of the bag easily, or open it up to get some more ventilation. However, you do need to remember to flip the pull inside or it gets a bit fiddly to flip it round when inside. The inner pocket on the top section of the bag, makes a handy spot to keep a mobile or wallet for extra protection.
Inside the bag there is a good amount of room across the shoulders for a mummy bag and the waist isn't too restrictive so you can move about inside, but there are not too many potential cold spot areas. I certainly felt warm pretty quickly in this bag and stayed warm.
