Our Verdict
The Flextail Tiny Sleeping Pad R05 AVS Mummy balances insulation, comfort, and usability in a compact form. With a tested R-value of 5.6, it’s appropriate for temperatures down to around –5°C. At 183cm long and 55cm wide, the mummy cut feels slightly more confined than the regular model but still accommodates side-sleepers reasonably well.
Its standout feature is the built-in AVS Capsule Pump. Fully integrated and rechargeable, it inflates the mat in under a minute and handles deflation too. The pump seals into the valve securely, though aligning and removing it takes a bit of practice. Once familiar, it streamlines setup compared to pumpsacks or breath inflation.
The pad uses a traditional valve design, so older-style pumpsacks remain compatible as a backup. At 7cm thick, with a quiet, slightly grippy surface, it offers good support and insulation without feeling bulky.
With solid construction, reliable warmth, and fast setup, it’s a useful option for cooler conditions when weight and speed matter. The packed size and included pump add real convenience without adding much bulk.

ASTM R-Value:
From 2020, there is a new industry standard for measuring the R-value (level of insulation) of sleeping mats – ASTM F3340-18. This new standard is the sleeping mat equivalent to the EN rating for sleeping bags.
You can now directly compare the R-value of mats rated using the ASTM F3340-18 with confidence that is a fair and accurate comparison between mats. In simple terms, the higher the R-value, the warmer the mat.
In general terms, an R-value below 2.0 is for summer use, 2.0 to 4.0 is for cooler 3 season use and 4.0+ is for winter temperatures.
