Our Verdict
At 256g (Medium), the Montbell Tempest Jacket strikes a strong balance between weight, weatherproofing and technical function. The 3-layer GORE-TEX construction and 20-denier nylon face fabric provide a solid feel without bulk, making it well-suited for high-output use across variable terrain.
I took a Large and found the fit spot on, trim but with room to layer. The dual hem adjusters are easy to operate and help seal out draughts effectively. The tri-axial hood offers good coverage and visibility, and the three-point adjustment system holds well in the wind. That said, the two face adjusters felt stiff and fiddly, especially with gloves; they may loosen over time, but can be a bit of a faff initially.
Chest pockets are well placed and harness-compatible, but the lack of hand pockets is a noticeable omission for general use. Breathability stands out. The membrane and generous pit zips effectively manage internal moisture, even during extended climbs or fast-paced efforts. Despite the lightweight build, durability holds up well with careful use.
