Our Verdict
The Hyperlite Mountain Gear Southwest 50 Rucksack is an ultralight, rugged pack designed for those seeking versatility and durability in both on- and off-trail adventures. A 55L main compartment and nearly 10L of external storage offer ample space for multi-day trips without sacrificing the streamlined efficiency that ultralight hikers expect. The solid-fabric Dyneema pockets offer protection from the elements and minimise snagging, making it ideal for rough terrains. Still, as they are not elasticated, they do not have much “give”
Weighing just 961g (medium size), the Southwest 50 punches well above its weight in terms of durability. Its 150-denier black Dyneema fabric offers enhanced abrasion resistance. This makes it particularly well-suited for long-distance hikers who prioritise low weight but still require a pack capable of handling demanding conditions. The removable aluminium stays and dual-density hip belt provide solid load transfer and comfort.
Overall, the Southwest 50 stands out for its durability, weather resistance, and no-nonsense design, making it an excellent choice for experienced hikers tackling rugged, all-season environments.
