Our Verdict
Sierra Design's Shut Eye 20 Synthetic Sleeping Bag uses 964g of SierraLoft Synthetic Insulation to deliver a -5°C Comfort Limit in a bag weighing 1266g. For a synthetic bag that is a good balance of weight and temperature which is made even more impressive at such a low price. Obviously, you can get a down bag at this temperature rating for a lot less weight and a much smaller pack size but the price will be much higher.
The main benefit of using synthetic insulation in bags is it's ability to retain warmth and keep you insulated when moisture is involved. These bags are ideal for damp conditions such as use with a tarp or bivy, especially when you are doing multiple nights like that. The bag uses a durable 20D material for both the inner lining and outer shell and it has all the usual features you'd expect on a mummy shaped bag, with a good length zip opening, anti-snag zipper, cinchable hood, and the addition of a hand pocket so you can wrap up in it like a blanket.
